报告摘要:
Bio-inspired technology looks for inspiration from the biology world and tries to catch up or even surpass biological performances. The early and most successful examples include airplane, radar, Velcro tape, waterproof clothes, ant colony algorithm, and artificial neural network, among others. Those inventions have changed the way we live, and no doubt have made our lives much better. Biology can offer us inspiration to solve the problems we encounter on our planet.
In this seminar, I will first review bio-inspired technologies. I will explain the principles underlying the phenomena we see in the biology world. I will introduce the problems in the biology world and try my best to guide you to think about the world we live in.
In the meantime, I will also introduce some of the recent work my lab (the Bio-inspired Mechatronics Lab) is doing, i.e., robotic fish, intelligent control, and efficient robotic arm. We seek inspiration from the natural world, rethink about the principles underlying, and apply those principles to engineering systems to obtain performances that have never achieved before. With robotic fish, we apply reinforcement learning to enable target position and pose seeking/achieving, with any random initial position and any disturbances. We also apply passive dynamics and reinforcement learning to control foot placement with robustness and efficiency. With the robotic arm project, we apply energy recycling and passive control to improve the efficiency by an order, yet still achieve the same motion performance as the traditional robotic arm.
