报告摘要:
Climate extremes, such as increased drought and variations in seasonal rainfall, lead to significant impacts on both the safety and serviceability of civil infrastructure. To mitigate economic and social losses, there is an urgent need to consider infrastructure that is both sustainable and environmentally friendly. This study underscores the imperative role of nature-based solutions involving plants and addresses the pressing need to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of soil crack formation, root growth, and their combined influence on soil moisture and slope deformation under varying seasonal conditions. This research investigates both bare and vegetated zones, with vetiver grasses (Vetiveria zizanioides sp) on a full-scale embankment in Thailand. Spatiotemporal crack analysis reveals the significant widening of cracks during drought periods in bare areas, while the presence of vetiver roots minimizes cracks in vegetated zones. The research findings also underscore the benefits of grass planting in mitigating the adverse impacts of seasonal climate conditions, where plants and their roots contribute to reducing drastic soil moisture variations, thereby enhancing soil water retention and improving the stability and serviceability of the embankments.
