内容提要：

Storing heat in engineered structures and legacy Mine shafts presents a new way for renewable energy utilization. This study investigates the challenges and safety of heat storage in abandoned, flooded coal mine shafts via a joint experimental/modelling investigation and the design of a pilot project at a legacy mineshaft in Scotland. We present modelling results on the implications of storing heat in the mine water and cycling the temperature within the shaft for: mineshaft stability, geochemical evolution of the water within the shaft, heat and water flow in the rock mass around the shaft. We also present some of the challenges around characterising abandoned mineshafts.
