Master's Admissions Adjustment (Transfer) Notice for the Department of Civil and Smart Infrastructure Engineering, Shantou University (2026)

Shantou University, founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council, is a comprehensive public university and a key member of the "211 Project" in Guangdong Province. It is jointly established by the Guangdong Provincial Government, the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and the Ministry of Education. In 2015, the university was selected for the Guangdong Province High-Level University Development Program. The university is located in the coastal city of Shantou, the heart of Eastern Guangdong and one of China's earliest Special Economic Zones. It comprises the Sangpu Mountain Campus and the East Coast Campus. Nestled by mountains and the sea, the campus features multiple buildings designed by world-renowned architects, offering a beautiful environment and advanced facilities, earning it the title "Flower of University Architecture."

The university began enrolling master's students in 1990 and was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 1998. It currently boasts 6 first-level doctoral degree programs with 52 second-level programs, 20 first-level master's degree programs with 137 second-level programs, 5 post-doctoral research stations, and numerous provincial/ministerial key laboratories and research platforms.

I. Discipline Introduction and Research Directions

Civil Engineering undergraduate education began in 1985, and in 2014, it became one of the first programs in China to receive professional assessment (accreditation) from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. A doctoral degree program in "Structural Engineering" was established in 2003. The discipline currently includes a first-level doctoral program in Civil Engineering, a first-level master's program in Civil Engineering, a professional master's program in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, and a post-doctoral research station. In 2020, the Civil Engineering major was selected as a national first-class undergraduate program. The interdisciplinary field "Coastal Smart City," built upon Civil Engineering, is a high-level Guangdong Province construction discipline. The department has 52 full-time faculty members, including 13 professors, 12 associate professors, 16 doctoral supervisors, and 48 master's supervisors. Among these faculty are 3 members of foreign academies of engineering, 1 Changjiang Chair Professor, and multiple leading, outstanding, and young talents under the "Pearl River Talent Plan," as well as recipients of the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents award and the South Guangdong Excellent Teacher award. The department has joint doctoral training agreements with the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) and RMIT University (Australia).

The department hosts several key research platforms, including the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Structural Safety and Monitoring, the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Smart Construction and Maintenance of Coastal Urban Infrastructure, the Key Laboratory of Structure and Wind Tunnel (Education Department of Guangdong Province), the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Advanced Manufacturing of Special Ceramics (Ordinary University), the Shantou Key Laboratory of Offshore Wind Energy, and the Shantou Engineering Technology Research Center for Additive Manufacturing of Composite Materials and Structures. Additionally, there are 13 teaching and research laboratories, including the Civil Engineering Materials Lab, Road and Bridge Lab, and Advanced Composite Materials and Engineering Structures Lab. The total value of equipment and instruments is approximately 80 million RMB, with a laboratory area of about 7,800 m². Research directions within the discipline are closely aligned with practical engineering challenges in civil engineering, focusing on frontier issues to guide engineering applications while simultaneously emphasizing academic research and engineering practice.

With a glorious history spanning over 40 years, the Civil Engineering Department has cultivated numerous outstanding professionals, including nationally recognized talents. In the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) China Subject Ratings, the Civil Engineering discipline was rated A-. Today, the Department of Civil and Smart Infrastructure Engineering, with over 1,000 undergraduates and more than 300 doctoral and master's students, is vibrant and full of energy.

1. Civil Engineering (Academic Master, Planned Enrollment: 16 students)

Main Research Directions: Structural Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, Wind Engineering, New Materials and Structures for Civil Engineering, Smart Construction and Artificial Intelligence Applications.

2. Civil and Hydraulic Engineering (Professional Master, Planned Enrollment: 64 students)

Main Research Directions: Structural Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, Steel Structures and Steel Bridges, Concrete Fatigue and Fracture, Civil Engineering Materials, Composite Materials, Smart Construction, Artificial Intelligence, etc. These cover all second-level disciplines under the first-level Civil Engineering discipline, as well as interdisciplinary civil engineering fields.

II. Re-examination (Interview)

The re-examination will be conducted as an interview. The specific procedure is as follows:

  1. Begin with a self-introduction in English.

  2. Randomly draw two questions from a test bank and answer them on the spot. Questions will mainly cover core knowledge in Concrete Structures, Steel Structures (Building direction), Bridge Engineering (Bridge direction), Soil Mechanics (Geotechnical direction), and Mechanics of Materials (Mechanics direction).

  3. Randomly draw a short passage of professional foreign language from a test bank, read it aloud, and then translate it directly into Chinese.

  4. Present a PPT report on your graduation project (approx. 10 pages, try to use charts/graphs with minimal text), followed by questions from the re-examining faculty.

III. Reference Books for Master's Re-examination Subjects

  1. *Reinforced Concrete Structures: Volume 1 - Design Principles of Reinforced Concrete Structures*, edited by Southeast University, Tianjin University, Tongji University, China Architecture & Building Press (7th Edition, 2020). (All directions)
