Educational Features
Supported generously by the Hong Kong-based Li Ka Shing Foundation, the College of Engineering at Shantou University adheres to the educational mission of being based in China with a global vision, aiming to cultivate engineers who meet international standards. With an open mind, the college has introduced internationally advanced engineering education concepts and has carried out teaching reforms in accordance with international engineering education models. The college has fully adopted the world’s most advanced CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) engineering education model. In light of China’s current specific requirements for engineers regarding professional ethics, integrity, and professionalism, the college took the lead in China to propose a design-oriented EIP-CDIO (Ethics, Integrity, Professionalism – CDIO) engineering talent cultivation model. It is committed to cultivating internationally oriented engineers who possess a solid foundation in engineering science, multidisciplinary backgrounds, global perspectives, and outstanding management and communication skills.
The college has an international academic and management team characterized by global vision, academic excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Adhering to the philosophy that teaching, research, and learning reinforce each other, the college is dedicated to engaging with international frontiers in engineering technology, undertaking major national and local scientific research projects, and serving economic development. By building multidisciplinary and cross-cutting academic platforms, the college has achieved remarkable research outcomes.
The college boasts well-established teaching conditions and abundant learning resources, with its teaching, research, and learning facilities built to international standards. It currently houses a number of provincial and ministerial key laboratories and research platforms, including the “EIP-CDIO Engineering Education Model Innovation Experimental Zone” (a Ministry of Education talent cultivation model innovation experimental zone), the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology (Ministry of Education), the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Signal and Image Processing, the Key Laboratory of Structures and Wind Tunnel of the Education Department of Guangdong Province, the Computer Basic Course Laboratory and the Modern Electrical and Electronic Experimental Teaching Center (both Guangdong Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers for higher education institutions), the Shantou Light Industry Equipment Research Institute (a Guangdong Provincial Key Industry Technology Innovation Platform), as well as 40 specialized laboratories, including the Wind Tunnel Laboratory, the Structural Laboratory, the Modern Communications Comprehensive Laboratory, the Institute of Modern Network Technology, the Flexible Manufacturing System Laboratory, and the distinctive CDIO Innovation Practice Center of the College of Engineering. In addition, the college has established student internship and entrepreneurship practice bases in cooperation with many domestic and international enterprises, providing students with excellent environments and opportunities for entrepreneurial practice and enabling them to receive comprehensive skills training on the basis of a solid systematic knowledge foundation.
With undergraduate education as its foundation, the college has continuously enhanced its educational offerings and formed a complete talent cultivation system. The college currently offers five undergraduate programs: Computer Science and Technology, Electronic Information Engineering, Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation. Among these, Computer Science and Technology and Electronic Information Engineering are recognized as Guangdong Provincial Brand Specialties. The college also has a doctoral program in Structural Engineering, master’s programs in nine fields (Computer Software, Computer Application, Signal and Information Processing, Communication and Information Systems, Structural Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Design and Theory, Mechatronic Engineering, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering), as well as three professional master’s programs in engineering fields including Mechanical Engineering.
To cultivate engineers who meet international standards, the college regularly invites distinguished domestic and international experts to organize a series of renowned activities, such as the “World Engineers Forum,” “Growth Salon,” and the “EIP-CDIO Quality Development Training Camp.” It has established a well-developed system for students’ extracurricular academic and technological innovation activities. Students have won numerous awards in competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition. In recent years, the employment rate of college graduates has remained above 98%. Graduates are primarily employed in high-tech enterprises, multinational corporations, universities, research institutions, government agencies, and public institutions, mainly in the Pearl River Delta region. The majority of alumni have become technical core members and leaders in various industries.
