2026 Master's Admissions Adjustment (Transfer) Notice for the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Shantou University

Shantou University, founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council, is a comprehensive public university and a key member of the "211 Project" in Guangdong Province. It is jointly established by the Guangdong Provincial Government, the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and the Ministry of Education. In 2015, the university was selected for the Guangdong Province High-Level University Development Program. The university is located in the coastal city of Shantou, the heart of Eastern Guangdong and one of China's earliest Special Economic Zones. It comprises the Sangpu Mountain Campus and the East Coast Campus. Nestled by mountains and the sea, the campus features elegant architectural styles, earning it the title "Flower of University Architecture."

Shantou University began enrolling master's students in 1990, became a degree-conferring unit for master's programs in 1993, for doctoral programs in 1998, and for equivalent academic qualifications for master's degrees in 2001. The university currently has 2 national key disciplines, established "Changjiang Scholar" Chair Professorships, 8 post-doctoral research stations, 6 first-level doctoral degree programs, 20 first-level master's degree programs (covering 52 second-level doctoral programs and 137 second-level master's programs), and 20 professional master's degree programs.

I. Discipline Introduction and Research Directions

In 1988, Shantou University established the Department of Mechatronics (later renamed the Department of Mechanical Engineering). In 1995, the Mechanical Engineering discipline obtained a master's degree authorization point. In 1997, it was initiated as a key discipline for Shantou University's "211 Project." In 2000, it was approved for a master's degree program. In 2001, the Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Laboratory was approved as a Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, becoming one of the earliest approved national platforms in the field of intelligent manufacturing. In 2005, it took the lead in China to implement CDIO engineering education reform. In 2009, it was approved as the fifth batch of national characteristic specialty construction sites. In 2010, it joined the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer" training program. In 2012, it was approved as a Guangdong Provincial Specialty Comprehensive Reform construction site. In 2017, the Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation major received professional certification from the China Engineering Education Association (effective 2018, the only "unconditional six-year" certification among 293 certified programs nationwide). In 2018, the Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation major was approved as a key specialty construction site in Guangdong Province, and a new major, "Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering," was established. In 2019, the Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation major was approved as a national and Guangdong provincial first-class undergraduate major construction site. In 2020, Shantou University's "Engineering" discipline, with Mechanical Engineering as its core, entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings for the first time. In 2021, Shantou University's Mechanical Engineering was rated A in the Times Higher Education (THE) China Subject Ratings (ranking among the top 23 universities nationwide), and the Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering major was approved as a Guangdong provincial first-class undergraduate major construction site. Its main research platforms include the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology (Ministry of Education), the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Machine Vision Intelligent Inspection Equipment, the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Robotics Design, the Key Laboratory of Guangdong Universities - Shantou University Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Laboratory, the Shantou Light Industry Equipment Research Institute, and the Wind Turbine Control System Industry-University-Research Platform.

Closely aligning with national strategic plans and needs, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Shantou University focuses on strategic emerging industries such as industrial machine tools, brain-computer interfaces, integrated circuits, offshore wind power, and the low-altitude economy, as well as regional characteristic and advantageous industries like textile and apparel, craft toys, and precision manufacturing of basic components. Concentrating on core directions including intelligent perception, intelligent design, precision manufacturing, and intelligent operation and maintenance, the department conducts research into fundamental scientific problems and tackles key technologies related to intelligent perception technology and equipment, intelligent design theory and applications, intelligent operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment, and ultra-precision manufacturing and equipment. The goal is to master core key technologies with independent intellectual property rights and achieve innovative results that drive progress in regional manufacturing technology.

Over the past five years, the department has undertaken more than 300 projects, including National Key R&D Programs, special projects from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for industrial foundations and high-quality manufacturing development, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, NSFC-Guangdong projects, Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Plan projects, and industry-sponsored projects. This includes over 30 national-level projects, with approved funding exceeding 90 million RMB. Nearly 30 technology transfer contracts have been signed, with a total value exceeding 30 million RMB. The department has published over 900 papers, including over 600 SCI-indexed and over 200 Ei-indexed papers, with over 30 selected as ESI Hot/Highly Cited Papers. More than 10 books or textbooks have been authored or edited. The number of patents granted exceeds 500. The department has received over 20 various awards. Concurrently, the discipline serves local economic development, with a number of research results being applied and promoted in light industry equipment manufacturing enterprises and wind energy equipment manufacturers, yielding significant economic and social benefits.

Admission Majors

  1. 085500 Mechanical Engineering (Professional Master, Planned Adjustment Enrollment: Approximately 60 students, including industry-university joint training programs; subject to the quota issued by the Graduate School)

  2. 080200 Mechanical Engineering (Academic Master, Planned Adjustment Enrollment: 13 students; subject to the quota issued by the Graduate School)

  3. 0802Z1 Low-Altitude Technology and Engineering (Academic Master, Planned Adjustment Enrollment: 5 students; subject to the quota issued by the Graduate School)

II. Re-examination (Interview)

Re-examination Format: Interview

2.1 Re-examination Content:

(1) The re-examination format is the same for both academic and professional master's degree candidates.

(2) The re-examination content mainly assesses the following areas:

  • ① Oral English proficiency.

  • ② Educational background, research experience, and research ethics.

  • ③ Mastery of fundamental and professional knowledge; relevant experimental skills and the ability to apply comprehensive knowledge; academic thinking and innovation awareness.

  • ④ Level of understanding of cutting-edge issues in the discipline.

  • ⑤ Mental agility, logical thinking ability, and language expression ability.

Specific content is as follows:

  1. Professional Knowledge Assessment (40% of re-examination score): This covers fundamental courses in mechanical engineering, including but not limited to: Mechanical Design, Mechanical Principles, Control Principles, Mechanical Engineering Testing Techniques, Theoretical Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, etc. During the re-examination, the candidate selects a question number. Under each number, there are two questions. The candidate has one chance to change the question set.

  2. Comprehensive Quality Assessment (40% of re-examination score): This assesses the candidate's involvement in scientific research projects or professional competitions during university, graduation (course) design, work experience, and their ability to solve problems encountered. It evaluates the candidate's ability to apply comprehensive fundamental theoretical knowledge, analytical thinking, language expression, research capability, and innovative capacity.

  3. English Proficiency Test (20% of re-examination score): This includes a self-introduction in English and translation of a short professional English passage (English to Chinese).

(3) Score Calculation

  1. The re-examination score is the sum of scores from each assessment method (on a 100-point scale). A total re-examination score below 60 points indicates failure to pass.

  2. Total Score = (Initial Exam Total Score Converted to 100-point scale) × 50% + Re-examination Total Score × 50%

2.2 Re-examination Procedure:

(1) Before the interview, candidates wait in the designated waiting room. The re-examination panel and order will be announced in advance. All candidates must submit their mobile phones to the assistant teacher. If there are materials to show the interview panel, please copy them in advance to the assistant teacher's USB drive.

(2) According to the assistant teacher's instructions in the interview panel's messaging group, candidates enter the interview room one by one.

(3) During the re-examination, follow the assistant teacher's instructions and proceed sequentially as follows:

① The candidate holds their ID card to show the front to the interview panel for identity verification.
Foreign Language Test: Self-introduction in English, translation of a short professional English passage (English to Chinese). The assistant teacher initiates screen sharing. The candidate randomly selects a question number for translation (English to Chinese). Preparation time: 30 seconds.
Fundamental Professional Knowledge Test. The assistant teacher initiates screen sharing and enters the question selection system. The candidate selects a question number and answers orally. Under each number, there are two questions. The candidate has one chance to change the question set.
Comprehensive Quality Assessment. The interviewing panel asks questions to understand the candidate's involvement in scientific research projects or professional competitions during university, graduation (course) design, work experience, and their ability to solve problems encountered.

(4) After the re-examination ends, the candidate exits the examination room. The interviewing panel scores the candidate, and the next candidate enters.

III. Scholarships and Financial Aid

  1. National Scholarship: 20,000 RMB/year/student. The award ratio is determined according to Ministry of Education guidelines.

  2. National Grant: Standard of 6,000 RMB/year/student. Students with a fixed salary income are not eligible. Students whose files and salary relations are not transferred to the university are not eligible.

  3. Academic Scholarships: For full-time master's students (with salary relations and files transferred to the university):

    • First Year: Two tiers. First tier: 12,000 RMB/year/student (distribution rate ≤ 20%). Second tier: 7,000 RMB/year/student (all eligible students not receiving the first tier will receive this).

    • Second Year onwards: Three tiers. First tier: 12,000 RMB/year/student (20% distribution). Second tier: 6,000 RMB/year/student (60% distribution). Third tier: 2,000 RMB/year/student (20% distribution).

  4. "Three Auxiliary Roles" Stipends: The university provides opportunities for each full-time master's student to participate in teaching, research, or management assistance roles each academic year.

IV. Adjustment (Transfer) Requirements

  1. Applicants must meet the admission requirements for the target major as specified in Shantou University's admissions brochure.

  2. The total initial exam score and individual subject scores must meet the Class A examinee re-examination score line stipulated by the Ministry of Education for 2026.

  3. The applicant's initial exam subjects should be the same as or similar to those for the target adjustment major, and the unified national examination subjects must be identical.

  4. The final adjustment requirements are subject to those announced by the Ministry of Education.

V. Adjustment Procedure

After the national score line is announced, all applicants for adjustment must register and request a transfer to Shantou University through the adjustment system on the China Graduate Admissions Information Network (http://yz.chsi.com.cn/). The respective departments will conduct a preliminary review of applicant qualifications and promptly notify qualified candidates to participate in the re-examination.

Please note the following:

  1. The YanZhao.com adjustment system is the only system; there is no alternative method.

  2. All adjustment applicants must register their consent to transfer to Shantou University on the China Graduate Admissions Information Network (http://yz.chsi.com.cn/), receive a re-examination notice from our university, and confirm participation to be placed on the re-examination list.

  3. After the re-examination, adjustment candidates deemed suitable for admission must promptly log in to the YanZhao.com adjustment system to confirm and accept our university's admission notification. The setting and cancellation of admission status require mutual confirmation by both the admitting institution and the student.

  4. The enrollment numbers for each major in our admissions brochure are projected. The final enrollment numbers are subject to the quota issued by the Ministry of Education.
