Party Building as Guidance, Staying True to the Mission with Pragmatic Responsibility

As a member of the Party Branch of the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology (Ministry of Education) and former Committee Member for Organization of the Faculty Party Branch of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Shi Yi has always taken Party building as the guidance, devoted himself to branch development and consolidated ideological foundations.
In scientific research, he pursues truth and focuses on distributed optical fiber sensing technology, striving to overcome key industry bottlenecks. In the classroom, he fulfills the mission of fostering virtue through education and carefully nurtures young students. He also proactively shoulders the public science popularization responsibility as a Party member, delivering frontier AI knowledge to schools.
Through his words and deeds, he practices the original aspiration and responsibility of a Communist Party member, and has been honored as Excellent Communist Party Member of Shantou University twice.

Striving for Scientific and Technological Innovation, Scaling Academic Peaks

Science and technology are the primary productive forces, and innovation is the primary driving force for development. Long-distance oil and gas pipelines, as critical national energy arteries, are mostly laid in complex field environments, making safety monitoring extremely challenging.
Shi Yi has long been engaged in the application of distributed optical fiber sensing technology and intelligent algorithm development. He led the research and development of an intelligent distributed optical fiber pipeline safety early warning system, which greatly reduces manual inspection costs and effectively solves the pain points of pipeline safety monitoring in complex field environments.
He has presided over multiple national and provincial research projects, published more than 60 SCI papers, and been granted over 10 invention patents. He was consecutively listed in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists annual impact rankings for 2024 and 2025, continuously driving technological upgrading and enhancing academic influence in the field.

Devoted to Teaching, Teaching Students in Accordance with Their Aptitude and Making Learning Enjoyable

In class, Shi Yi is known for his friendly, humorous and vivid teaching style, and is affectionately called “classmate” by students. He actively innovates teaching models, deeply integrates ideological and political elements into professional courses, and adopts blended online-offline teaching. He enriches lectures with his own research and study experiences, explains difficult knowledge in a clear and accessible way, and creates an interactive classroom atmosphere deeply loved and recognized by students.
In teaching, he has achieved remarkable results, winning 2 First Prizes of Shantou University Teaching Achievement Award and 1 Second Prize of Guangdong Province Teaching Achievement Award. He also launched the service-oriented labor course AI on Campus, delivering popular science lectures at more than 10 primary and secondary schools in the Chaoshan area to promote frontier AI knowledge among young people.

Carefully Cultivating Talents, Guiding Students to Pursue Dreams

Adhering to the educational philosophy that “nurturing students’ independent exploration ability is the way to cultivate pillars of the nation”, Shi Yi practices heuristic and guided education. He often communicates deeply with students, encouraging them to think independently and explore bravely, focusing on cultivating their diligence and perseverance.
He fully accompanies and guides students in various electronic science and technology innovation competitions, leading them to win more than 20 competition awards. He has mentored 5 National Scholarship recipients, and many undergraduate and postgraduate graduates have been admitted to top universities at home and abroad, including Peking University, Fudan University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Duke University. He has also been honored as Excellent Instructor many times.
Since starting his teaching career, Shi Yi has always upheld the principle of “cultivating talents for the Party and the nation”. He pursues excellence in scientific research, educates people silently in teaching, and fulfills his duties as a Party member in public services.
In the future, he will continue to stand as a pioneering Party member, rooted in the frontline of sensing technology research and innovation, stay committed to the cause of fostering virtue through education, and devote himself to public science popularization, contributing more to the high-quality development of higher education and the science and technology industry.
