Labor Glorifies, Craftsmanship Forges the Future A Review of New Engineering Construction Achievements at the College of Engineering

May is a season to pay tribute to workers.
At the College of Engineering, Shantou University, there is a group of dedicated individuals: they root themselves in classrooms, refining every course; they devote themselves to laboratories, tackling technical challenges one after another; they mentor students, pursuing excellence in competitions and projects; they serve local industries, demonstrating responsibility and commitment through engineering practice.
On the occasion of the International Workers’ Day, we hereby present a collection of the college’s recent achievements in honors and awards, faculty development, talent cultivation, student competitions, and New Engineering construction. We salute all members of the College of Engineering who strive at the forefront of teaching, research, engineering practice, and administrative services.

I. Honor Leadership: Striving for Excellence in New Engineering Construction

In recent years, closely following national requirements for New Engineering construction and responding to the needs of regional industrial development, the College of Engineering has continuously advanced specialty construction, curriculum reform, practical education, and scientific research innovation. Recently, the college has achieved a series of accomplishments in teaching reform, research breakthroughs, platform construction, and talent cultivation, fully demonstrating the vigorous momentum of its high-quality development.

(I) Research Project Funding and Awards

In 2025, the College of Engineering secured a total of 120 research projects with a total funding of 17.64 million yuan.
For the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 8 projects (including 2 transferred from other universities) were approved in 2025, with a total funding of 2.79 million yuan.
In 2025, faculty members of the college published 308 journal papers, including nearly 212 SCI papers and 28 EI papers.
The number of ESI papers published by teachers and students has grown rapidly.
Engineering discipline has maintained its position in the global top 1% of ESI rankings and continuously improved to 0.21%.

(III) Academic Conferences

In 2025, the college held a total of 42 engineering research academic forums.
  • Invited Academician Chu Jian from Nanyang Technological University, Academician Giuseppe Lacidogna from Politecnico di Torino, and Distinguished Professor Huang Yu from Tongji University to deliver lectures in the Yangtze River Lecture Series.

  • October 2025: 2025 Eastern Guangdong International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering.

  • November 2025: Sub-forum of the 7th Sangpu Forum.

  • November 2025: 2025 CGMA Conference on Gearing and Electric Drive Industry, hosted by the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology, Ministry of Education.

  • December 2025: Graduate Academic Annual Conference.

  • Nearly 30 sessions of forums and salons, including the Intelligent Manufacturing Forum of the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the Interdisciplinary Academic Forum on Coastal Smart Cities, and the Academic Salon of the Department of Medical Engineering.

(IV) Faculty Development and Honors

On September 20, 2025, Stanford University and Elsevier Data Repository released the 8th edition of the World’s Top 2% Scientists list, selecting scholars based on career-long and single-year impact.
A total of 10 scholars from the College of Engineering were listed, setting a new record:

Academician Wang Quan was ranked among the World’s Top 0.05% Highly Ranked Scholars – Lifetime Academic Impact 2025.
The disciplines of the listed scholars cover civil engineering, mechanical engineering, artificial intelligence, and other fields. Being listed among the world’s top 2% scientists indicates that the college’s researchers are at a leading level with high global influence. This not only recognizes their individual academic capabilities but also reflects the college’s achievements in building a high-level faculty team, promoting sustained research development, and enhancing global influence.
Wu Ming was awarded the title of “2025 Excellent Teacher of Southern Guangdong”.
Wu Ming won the Second Prize in Guangdong Division of the 5th National College Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition.

II. Role Model Leadership: Fulfilling Educational Responsibilities with the Spirit of Labor

Shen Shuilong

Professor Shen Shuilong has long been engaged in research on intelligent development and maintenance of urban infrastructure. He has received 6 provincial and ministerial research awards, including:
  • 1 Second Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education (Principal Investigator, Rank 1)

  • 2 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (participant)

  • 1 First Prize of the Guangdong Civil Engineering and Architectural Society

He has co-authored 6 books, published over 450 papers including more than 330 English SCI papers, and been granted over 150 patents, of which more than 50 have been transferred or applied, with 5 software copyrights.
He has been consecutively listed in Stanford’s Top 2% Scientists and Elsevier’s Highly Cited Chinese Researchers. He was named among the best scientists in two fields by Research.com and ranked among the global top 10 highly cited scholars in geological resources and engineering by Tongzhouyun Global Highly Cited Scholars Database for consecutive years.
In 2023, he founded the international journal Smart Construction and Sustainable Cities under Springer Nature and serves as Editor-in-Chief. He is also Associate Editor of Geotextiles and Geomembranes (SCI) and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals and the Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering.
In 2024, Professor Shen Shuilong was elected Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea and Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Ling Siying

Professor Ling Siying is Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Secretary of the Departmental Party Branch, and Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education. He serves as:
  • Chinese registered expert of ISO/TC 60 (Gear Accuracy)

  • Member of the 8th National Technical Committee on Gear Standardization (TC52)

  • Executive Director of the Mechanical Measurement Instrument Branch of the Chinese Instrumentation Society

His research focuses on ultra-precision manufacturing of master gear standards, high-end gear processing equipment, and measuring instruments.
He has presided over projects including the National Key R&D Program and NSFC grants totaling over 20 million yuan.
His team developed Grade 1 (highest national standard) master gears and involute artifacts, which are used as physical benchmarks for gear metrology by the National Institute of Metrology, China. His team is the only one in China capable of designing, manufacturing, and inspecting Grade 1 master gear artifacts.
In recent years, his team has mastered ultra-precision machining and measurement of Grade 1 gears, nano-precision shaft and guide rail lapping, and manufacturing of high-end equipment.
Achievements include:
  • Over 60 journal papers

  • More than 120 authorized domestic and international invention patents

  • 20 technology transfers

Awards include:
  • Gold Medal of the Shangyin Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Doctoral Dissertation Award (first in cross-strait history)

  • First Prize of Pearl River Science and Technology Award

Professor Ling leads his team with craftsmanship spirit, devoting to industrializing research outcomes and educating students through practice, exemplifying the effectiveness of New Engineering construction at Shantou University.

Xu Biao

Associate Professor Xu Biao is Deputy Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering. With over a decade of dedication to control theory and engineering, he upholds the mission of fostering virtue through education, embodies craftsmanship in rigorous scholarship, and empowers New Engineering through integration of research and teaching. He is an outstanding model for young faculty members.
He teaches over 500 class hours annually and contributes to electronic and computer engineering program development. He integrates ideological and political education and engineering ethics into teaching, cultivating students’ rigorous, realistic, and refined craftsmanship.
In research, he focuses on intelligent optimization and control, smart logistics, and machine learning. He has presided over 2 provincial projects (Guangdong Natural Science Foundation) and multiple municipal and horizontal projects with total funding exceeding 500,000 yuan.
He has published over 10 SCI papers in top journals including IEEE TEVC, IEEE TSMCs, Information Sciences, Expert Systems With Applications, and been granted 5 invention patents and 1 software copyright.
Awards include:
  • Second Prize of Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Ministry of Education)

  • First Prize of Natural Science Award of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Association of Artificial Intelligence and Automation

His technologies have been applied in UAV collaborative delivery and power system optimization.
In education, he practices “teaching through competitions” and “research-teaching integration”. Over the past five years, he has guided students to win more than 10 national awards and over 50 provincial awards in competitions such as:
  • China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling

  • MCM/ICM

  • China Robot and Artificial Intelligence Competition

He has been honored as Excellent Instructor at national and provincial levels. He presided over university-level teaching reform projects and received the Second Prize of 2025 Guangdong Provincial Teaching Achievement Award for supply-side reform in interdisciplinary talent training. He has cultivated a large number of high-quality innovative engineering talents for the Greater Bay Area.

Zhao Linshuang

Associate Professor Zhao Linshuang conducts research on load transfer in composite foundations and consolidation deformation of soft soils, with achievements in analytical algorithms, geotechnical mathematical modeling, and uncertainty analysis.
He has presided over:
  • 1 NSFC Young Scientist Fund (Type C)

  • 3 Guangdong provincial projects

He has published over 30 SCI papers, including 19 as first/corresponding author (6 in CAS Zone 1, 12 in JCR Q1).
As an instructor for student innovation training, he encourages independent thinking and guides students to publish 3 academic papers and apply for 2 patents. His students have excelled in competitions such as the National University Student Structural Design Information Technology Competition.

Liu Qingxian

Dr. Liu Qingxian specializes in porous structure design and flexible pressure sensors. She has proposed innovative structural designs for ultra-sensitive, highly transparent, and wearable flexible sensors, expanding their application scenarios.
She has published over 20 papers in journals including Advanced Science, Nano-Micro Letters, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Materials Horizons, and Science China.
Total citations exceed 2,200.
  • 3 ESI highly cited/hot papers

  • 1 paper selected as Most Popular Paper 2025 and Best Review Article of the Year in Materials Horizons

She holds 3 authorized invention patents and has presided over NSFC and Guangdong Natural Science Foundation projects. As a key participant, she received the 2023 Second Prize of Shenzhen Natural Science Award.
In talent cultivation, she has guided undergraduate students to win multiple provincial competition awards. Her first master’s student was awarded University Outstanding Master Graduate.

Xu Chunying

Associate Professor Xu Chunying has been with the College of Engineering for five years, focusing on sensor networks, monitoring technology, and intelligent signal processing, especially for smart sensing and marine engineering safety monitoring.
She has presided over multiple national and provincial projects, including:
  • NSFC Young Scientist Fund

  • Subtask of the National Key R&D Program

  • Guangdong Natural Science Foundation General Program

She has published over 20 papers in high-level journals and conferences and holds more than 10 national invention patents.
In education, she adopts a student-centered philosophy, integrating research problems and engineering practice into teaching. She actively participates in teaching innovation and ideological-political course integration. As a graduate supervisor, she emphasizes students’ ability to solve complex engineering problems and nurtures their craftsmanship spirit.

Guo Weijin

Dr. Guo Weijin focuses on biomicrofluidics and biosensing, presiding over 4 national/provincial projects with achievements in point-of-care testing and microfluidics.
He actively involves undergraduates in research, providing full guidance from topic selection, experiment design, paper writing to academic presentations. He encourages students to participate in high-level international exchanges, supporting their admission to top universities worldwide:

Lu Hongwei

Dr. Lu Hongwei upholds the mission of fostering virtue through education, excelling in teaching and innovative research with craftsmanship spirit, contributing significantly to New Engineering construction.
His research focuses on multifunctional nanoprobes and integrated cancer diagnosis and therapy at the intersection of biomedical engineering and advanced materials.
He has published over 20 papers in authoritative journals including Nature Communications, Advanced Functional Materials, and Biomaterials.
He holds 5 authorized invention patents and has been awarded the NSFC Young Scientist Fund.
In teaching, he cultivates students’ research literacy and engineering capabilities, guiding them in scientific and technological innovation with a focus on creative thinking, practical ability, and exploratory spirit.

III. Youth Pursuing Dreams: Refining Real Competence in Engineering Practice

From laboratories to competition venues, from curriculum design to real engineering projects, students of the College of Engineering have grown into New Engineering talents with innovation awareness, engineering capability, and social responsibility through repeated scheme refinement, equipment debugging, algorithm optimization, and model verification.
In 2025, among the 84 university student competitions recognized by the Ministry of Education,
