On May 20, the Spring 2026 Demobilized Student Sharing Session of the College of Engineering was held at the National Defense Education Studio, Room 102, Building C, Jingyi Academy, Sangpu Mountain Campus. Xie Zifan, a Grade 2023 student majoring in Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, delivered a themed sharing session, hosted by Counselor Zhang Xin of the College of Engineering.
Xie enlisted in the army in March 2024 and served in an army unit in Shandong Province. He was discharged and resumed his studies in March 2026. Drawing on his service experience, he talked about his motivation to enlist, recruit training, experience as a scout, and reflections on military life.
He shared unforgettable moments from recruit training: to meet strict training standards, he persisted in high-intensity basic tactical drills on gravel grounds. While practicing low and high crawling positions, he ignored repeated elbow abrasions and greatly improved his tactical performance, winning third place in the final competition. This military experience vividly showed how army life shapes one’s willpower, self-discipline and execution ability.
Xie also explained in detail the full process of college students enlisting in the military, including online registration, physical examination, political assessment, pre-service training and other procedures. Based on his own experience with vision correction, he reminded students to prepare their eyesight and physical fitness in advance. He also highlighted the advantages of graduates joining the military, elaborating on preferential policies for undergraduate graduates in post assignment, promotion and development, as well as supporting measures such as tuition compensation, extra points in postgraduate entrance exams and priority recruitment by state-owned and central enterprises.
During the interactive session, students raised questions concerning eyesight requirements for military physical examination, army training and management, all of which were answered one by one by Xie.
Through a peer perspective on military service, this sharing session helped students understand military life and become familiar with enlistment procedures and career paths. It further strengthened their awareness of national defense responsibilities and promoted the high-quality development of national defense education and conscription work in the college and academy.
