On April 24, ahead of the International Labor Day, the "Smart Tech for All" Task Force of the College of Engineering, Shantou University, together with Dahua Subdistrict of Shantou, held the activity "One Bead, One Craftsmanship; Labor Day Salutes Warmth" at the Subdistrict Senior Activity Center. More than 10 elderly residents enjoyed creative handcrafting in interaction with young volunteers, experiencing festive warmth and care in advance.
At the event, the elderly participants became "craftsmen of golden years" and enjoyed making fuse bead creations under the guidance of volunteers. They freely matched colors and concentrated on designing patterns of animals, flowers, plants and fruits. After being ironed together, these ingenious works were made into refrigerator magnets.
The activity took "labor" and "craftsmanship" as its spiritual core. Before the handcraft session, volunteers explained to the elders the profound meaning of honoring workers on Labor Day. During the creation process, volunteers not only demonstrated how to pick beads, arrange patterns and match colors, but also delivered practical care — providing one-on-one guidance and assistance in a timely manner to those with poor eyesight or limited mobility. The elders also strengthened neighborhood bonds by sharing ideas on color matching and composition.
The organizer stated that the fuse bead activity served as both a festive warm-up and age-friendly brain and hand training, effectively improving the elderly’s hand dexterity and concentration.
