Inspired by Mentorship, Gradually Finding the Way
Since I did not have a background in mechanical engineering, I inevitably felt a bit apprehensive when I first joined the research group. However, Professor Chen Peng, with his years of deep expertise in intelligent acoustics and multimodal signal processing, carefully selected several representative papers for me to read intensively, laying a solid foundation for my subsequent research. After identifying fault diagnosis as my research direction, progress stalled for a while, which caused me considerable frustration. Professor Chen patiently guided me, explaining that research cannot be rushed, and helped me sort out the key issues in my current study, which gave me a sudden clarity and allowed me to successfully complete the first draft of my first academic paper. Faced with numerous issues in the initial draft, Professor Chen adhered to the philosophy of "teaching a man to fish," guiding me to think about how to revise such problems and then letting me make the corrections on my own. This process enabled me to gradually master the entire methodology from experimental design to paper writing, transforming me from a layman into a master's student who has begun to find his way. How fortunate I am to have such an excellent mentor on my academic journey!
Excellent Equipment, Greater Efficiency
The research group is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental equipment and abundant data resources, providing strong support for research. Among these, the Dynamics Prediction Simulator (DPS) developed by SpectraQuest is particularly crucial. It integrates multiple high-precision components including accelerometers, variable-speed drive motors, planetary gearbox systems, two-stage parallel gearbox systems, loading gearboxes, and load motors, capable of simulating transmission system operating conditions under complex working conditions. In addition, the group has accumulated vibration signal data from multiple sets of planetary gearboxes and other equipment, laying a solid data foundation for fault diagnosis research. The dual assurance of equipment and data enables research to achieve twice the result with half the effort—I am grateful to Professor Chen Peng for building such an excellent platform for us.
Balanced Lifestyle, Working Together
Beyond research, Professor Chen Peng also places great emphasis on balancing work and rest. Every month or so, he invites all group members to sit on the grass, sipping aromatic coffee and engaging in freewheeling conversations. In addition, Professor Chen regularly organizes team-building activities to relax and unwind—sometimes playing by the seaside on Nan'ao Island, sometimes taking leisurely walks in the ancient city of Chaozhou. After each activity, everyone returns to research with renewed energy and spirit.
Although the research directions of my fellow group members differ, whenever someone encounters a difficult problem, we always gather together to brainstorm and offer suggestions. Whether during lively group meeting discussions or private conversations, no one ever hesitates to share their ideas and experiences. This group atmosphere of mutual help and open sharing has supported me in going further and further on my research path.
The road ahead is long and arduous, but I will search high and low. Although the path of scientific research is by no means easy, Professor Chen Peng's personal example and teaching, along with the warm atmosphere of our group, have given me the confidence and strength to continue moving forward.
Smart Sensing and Sustainable Diagnosis and Prognostics Lab (S3DP-Lab)
S3DP-Lab was established by Associate Professor Chen Peng. In response to major national strategic needs such as "Industry 4.0," "Intelligent Manufacturing," and the autonomous control of high-end equipment, the lab has long been committed to cutting-edge research in industrial equipment intelligent sensing, fault diagnosis, and health management. The team conducts systematic research in areas including intelligent acoustics and multimodal signal processing, machine vision and advanced sensing, trustworthy multimodal AI and collaborative computing, embodied intelligence for industrial servo robots, and inspection and diagnosis of new energy lithium batteries and key equipment. Its research targets encompass aviation electromechanical power systems, intelligent transportation (such as high-speed trains), wind power transmission systems, and industrial robots, forming distinctive disciplinary features and research advantages. Team leader Associate Professor Chen Peng has been selected for Shantou University's "Outstanding Talent Program" and recognized as a High-Level Talent of Shantou City. He has led over 10 research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation, the AVIC Key Research and Development Project (sub-project), the Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Foundation, the Guangdong Science and Technology Plan Project, and enterprise-commissioned projects, and has participated in 6 national-level research tasks including the National Key Research and Development Program and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation. In recent years, the team has published over 50 SCI papers in JCR Category 1 and Chinese Academy of Sciences Category 1 and Category 2 Top journals, including 2 highly cited and hot papers. Relevant results have appeared in high-level journals such as Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, Expert Systems with Applications, IEEE Internet of Things Journal, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Ocean Engineering, and Journal of Sound and Vibration. The team has been granted 6 national invention patents, with research covering wind power equipment, rail transportation, port machinery, aerospace, and other fields.
Currently, the team comprises 1 associate professor and 15 master's students, and has built a research platform encompassing a mechanical component fault prediction and testing platform, multimodal industrial sensing systems, and a real operational database for large-scale industrial equipment.
