From March to June 2026, the College of Engineering of Shantou University, in collaboration with Fuchang Community and Lianxing Community of Dahua Subdistrict, conducted a series of volunteer activities titled "Warming the Sunset Years, Connecting Party Hearts with People's Hearts," featuring community elderly care services and needs assessment surveys. The activities targeted elderly groups including the aged, those living alone, and those with limited mobility, providing caring assistance and household visits.
This series of volunteer services adopted a model combining "in-home micro-services with in-depth interview surveys." In the preliminary phase, the team completed specialized training for volunteers covering etiquette, communication standards, and privacy protection to ensure safe and orderly service delivery. Volunteers were divided into groups to visit the homes of elderly residents, where they performed household cleaning, tidying, and clutter sorting, creating a neat and comfortable living environment for the elderly. Beyond the services, volunteers accompanied the elderly in conversation, listened to their daily stories, and provided emotional companionship and comfort, bridging the distance between generations.
Concurrently, the activity conducted a targeted survey on the needs of the elderly. Through face-to-face visits, volunteers accurately assessed the living conditions, actual difficulties, and service requests of the elderly, and collected suggestions for optimizing elderly care services.
After the activity, the team reviewed shortcomings in service details and held discussions around four key areas: tool adaptation, elderly information collection, home safety protection, and promotional material enhancement. A specialized optimization and improvement plan was formulated to lay a solid foundation for improving the quality and efficiency of future elderly care volunteer services.
Through a model of volunteer service combined with university-community collaboration, this initiative effectively guided young students to embrace social responsibility, improved the elderly care support service system, and carried forward the traditional virtue of respecting the elderly.
