On June 5, 2026, the College of Engineering and Jingyi College held a themed sharing session titled "Career Forward (Session 10): Outstanding Alumni Career Planning" in Multimedia Conference Room 114, Building 1, Phase 2. The event invited Hong Ziyang, a 2011-level alumnus majoring in Electronic Information Engineering from the College of Engineering, Shantou University, to share his experiences.
About the Speaker
Hong Ziyang, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor in the Department of Automation, School of Intelligent Science and Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen). He previously served as an Assistant Professor (Research) in the School of Data Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen). He obtained his Ph.D. in Robotics from Heriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom in 2023. His research encompasses underwater robotics, perception and localization of autonomous robots in extreme weather conditions, and robot learning. These research areas have significant demand and application in autonomous driving, service robotics, and ocean exploration. His research findings have been published in high-level journals such as IJRR and RAL, as well as at prestigious conferences including ICRA, RSS, and IROS.
Hong Ziyang shared his personal academic journey. He pursued his master's degree in a joint program involving three European countries, focusing on Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology, which has been applied to underwater inspection of offshore platforms. The program provided dedicated scholarships supporting studies at multiple universities across different countries. He cited the example of a classmate who first gained work experience before pursuing further studies and eventually received a Ph.D. offer from the University of Zurich, providing a reference for students considering alternative career paths.
Regarding opportunities for securing research positions, Hong Ziyang suggested leveraging AI tools and social media platforms to screen projects and connect with supervisors, advising students to delve deeply into 1 to 2 projects to refine their highlights. For doctoral applications, he encouraged students to take the initiative and not fear failure, pointing out that domestic AI open-source platforms value research capability over academic credentials, and that pursuing research within China also offers promising prospects.
During the interactive session, alumnus Wu Zhiliang was invited to share his career development insights. Wu Zhiliang has worked at leading companies including Lenovo, OPPO, and NIO, and currently serves as a technical expert at an AI startup. Drawing on his cross-sector experience, he deconstructed career directions, job requirements, and advancement paths in the technology industry, helping students plan their career directions based on their individual circumstances.
This sharing session was practical in content and broad in coverage, addressing three major pathways: overseas further studies, domestic research, and industry employment. It effectively bridged the information gap between research and career paths, helping students identify their development directions, strengthen their professional competencies, and steadily plan their future career trajectories.
College of Engineering Student Party Branches Organize Screening of Love Letter to Grandma
On June 9, the College of Engineering organized undergraduate and graduate student Party members to attend a themed film screening at Wanda Plaza Cinema. The activity used cultural immersion as a vehicle for ideological education, guiding Party members to appreciate the transmission of family values and cultivate a sense of patriotism and national commitment.
The screening featured the film Love Letter to Grandma, which tells the story of the protagonist's life with his elders. Centered on family bonds and spiritual inheritance, the film presents traditional family ethics and interprets the essence of intergenerational communication. The atmosphere at the screening was solemn and warm, with Party members fully engaged throughout the film, and the storyline resonating deeply with the audience.
After the screening, Party members exchanged thoughts and reflections on the film. Participants shared their feelings based on their own experiences, discussing the meaning of family bonds, youth responsibility, and the original aspirations of Party members, while deepening their understanding of family value cultivation.
This activity integrated humanities education with Party building, fully leveraging the role of cultural enrichment in education. The College of Engineering will continue to expand forms of ideological education, promote the deep integration of Party building with the cultivation of humanistic qualities, and guide Party members to stay true to their original aspirations and take on responsibilities with dedication.
College of Engineering and Jingyi College Host "Treasure Memories, New Journey Ahead" Graduation Season Flea Market
On June 17, the College of Engineering and Jingyi College hosted the "Treasure Memories, New Journey Ahead" graduation season flea market at Building D of Jingyi College on Sangpu Mountain Campus. The event aimed to practice the concept of green development, promote the recycling of idle resources, and use "items" as a bridge to create a space for emotional connection between graduating students and current students.
The event featured a free trading zone, a charity donation zone, an interactive experience zone, and a time capsule zone. Graduating students set up stalls by dormitory, offering professional books, daily necessities, handicrafts, and other items at marked prices or available for exchange, attracting many current students to browse and make purchases. The charity donation zone was also open simultaneously, where idle items such as books and stationery were collected and will be channeled into social value creation.
Interactive activities such as stamp collection for lucky draws and the time capsule message wall added fun and warmth to the trading scene, with college-branded cultural products being particularly popular among participants. As old items changed hands, youth stories continued; as interactions took place, friendships were passed down from generation to generation.
This event, centered on the recycling of idle items, deepened the cultural and educational essence of the college, showcased the sincere feelings of graduating students toward environmental consciousness and their attachment to the college, and provided current students with a platform to build warm connections with their graduating seniors.
