Consolidating Ideological Foundations: Teaching with Virtue and a Strong Sense of Responsibility

Wu Ming once served as Secretary of the Faculty Party Branch of the Civil Engineering Department. He always puts ideological and political development first. Instead of merely keeping written records, he integrates the study of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era into daily practice.
Colleagues describe him as poised, modest, mild-mannered, selfless, and always stepping forward to tackle difficulties. For students, he takes the initiative every year to expand internship and employment channels, carefully guiding young scholars to take their first steps in professional life. He has repeatedly been rated an Excellent Communist Party Member and elected a Dual-Leader Party Branch Secretary (excellent in both Party building and professional expertise) at the university level. Those around him regard him as a model of the maxim “A teacher must possess profound knowledge and serve as an exemplary role model.”

Cultivating Talents with Craftsmanship: Two-Way Empowerment of Curriculum Ideology and Professional Learning

Wu Ming pursues an educational effect like “moistening things silently”. In the curriculum ideology reform of Bridge Engineering, he pioneered the “One Core, Seven Dimensions, Five Integrations” framework, excavating ideological and political elements to embed into teaching. He also built a case library of seven historic bridges to root red genes and craftsmanship spirit in classroom instruction.
He adopts a five-pronged teaching method: lecture, investigation, creation, presentation and debate, guiding students to act with resonance through reasoning, emotional communication, enlightenment and tutoring. Meanwhile, he practices the OBE-CDIO (Outcome-Based Education – Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) philosophy, abandoning cramming pedagogy and proposing the “One Center, Three Classrooms, One Goal” model to build high-level courses.
Over the past five years, he has presided over 5 provincial teaching reform projects, published 5 teaching reform papers and compiled 3 textbooks. His accolades include First Prize, Guangdong Division of National Micro-Lesson Competition, two Second Prizes in Provincial Teaching Innovation Contests, Outstanding Teacher of Shantou City, the First Batch of Outstanding Teachers of Shantou University, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award. His courses Bridge Engineering and Ethics and Aesthetics of Bridge Architecture have successively been recognized as Provincial and National First-Class Courses — proving professional classrooms can also forge lofty ideals and moral character.

Empowering Teaching with Scientific Research: Expanding New Frontiers Through Research

Outside teaching, Wu Ming devotes himself to research. In the last five years, he has deeply participated in 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 3 Guangdong Natural Science Foundation projects. He has published 12 papers in international journals including Structures, Case Studies in Construction Materials, Magazine of Concrete Research and International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, filed 4 patents, and won Second Prize at the National Invention Award.
He firmly believes research exists not just for publishing papers, but to bring cutting-edge advances into classrooms. Therefore, he regularly integrates the latest disciplinary progress into lectures, enabling students to master classic theories while broadening their academic horizons.

Practicing Holistic Education: Igniting Students’ Dreams of Innovation

Wu Ming attaches great importance to fostering students’ innovative capabilities. When supervising student research projects and graduation theses, he offers full-cycle meticulous guidance covering topic selection, progress control, literature retrieval and innovative design, encouraging students to explore independently and dare to experiment.
He fully leverages the second classroom and adheres to the philosophy of “promoting learning and teaching through competitions”. In the past five years, students under his guidance have won 37 national awards and 9 provincial awards in various national disciplinary contests, including 5 Special and First Prizes in events such as the National College Students Bridge Design Competition and BIM Graduation Design Innovation Competition. His team has claimed First Prize in the National BIM Graduation Design Competition for consecutive years — tangible proof of his fruitful work cultivating innovative talents.
Twenty-five years, a lifetime dedicated to one cause. Rooted in love, guided by virtue, boosted by research, and focused on nurturing innovators, Wu Ming stands like a bridge: carrying students toward their ideal futures while fulfilling his own mission as an educator. Among university teachers of the new era, he is a plain yet powerful role model.
