On the afternoon of September 23, the launch ceremony and the first special lecture of the 2026 Shantou new energy popularization campaign “Green Power Empowers the Hundred Counties Project, Science Lights up Villages” took place at the East Coast Campus of Shantou University. Hosted by Shantou Association for Science and Technology and undertaken by the School of Engineering, Shantou University.

Professor Zhang Jian, Vice Dean of the School of Engineering, delivered the opening address.
He stated that green low-carbon development represents an inevitable trend of high-quality development. The new energy industry serves as core support for China’s “Dual Carbon” strategy and industrial upgrading. This campaign brings cutting-edge green energy knowledge to campuses and rural communities, making high-quality science outreach accessible at grassroots levels. As the organizer, the School of Engineering will provide full support, guiding students to learn about offshore wind power and reserve young talents for Shantou’s new energy sector.
Cao Shibao then addressed the audience.
He noted that leveraging the 15th Five-Year Plan, Shantou focuses on offshore wind power to build a hundred-billion-yuan new energy industrial cluster. New energy has become a green driving force for fostering new-quality productive forces, advancing the Hundred Counties, Thousand Towns and Ten Thousand Villages Project and regional high-quality development.
He encouraged students to seize this learning opportunity, master cutting-edge energy knowledge, embrace energy transition, and devote themselves to national energy development.

Special Science Lecture
After the ceremony, Tian Zhenya, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Mingyang Central Research Institute and PhD candidate at Shantou University, gave a lecture titled Development Status and Trends of Deep-sea Floating Wind Power Technology.
He reviewed global wind power progress and offshore wind construction, analyzed Shantou’s geographic strengths, development plans, industrial opportunities and challenges. He compared technical features of various offshore wind turbines and presented Mingyang’s key research achievements and benchmark floating wind projects. The lecture was industry-oriented and informative.
This campaign is a key practice of university-local cooperation between the School of Engineering and Shantou Association for Science and Technology. It enables students to learn about frontier deep-sea wind technologies and builds a bridge for industry-university-research communication, stimulating students’ enthusiasm for research and innovation.
The school will continue regular new energy science outreach, talent training and popularization work, contributing to professional talent cultivation, new-quality productive forces and the Hundred Counties Project in Shantou.
